University of Waterloo opens facility to research and test green car technologies

The University of Waterloo along with the School of Engineering unveiled a 4,000 square foot, 3 lab addition today.

The facility will be home to the Green and Intelligent Automotive research centre. GAIA is part of the Waterloo Centre for Automotive Research (WatCAR).

A division in the Faculty of Engineering, GAIA was made possible by millions in funding by 3 parties.

The Governments of Ontario and Canada provided 2.1 million dollars in funding each. The money came from the Ontario Research Fund: Research Infrastructure program and the Canada Foundation for Innovation.

Toyota also chipped in with 1 million dollars in initial funding.

A team of over 150 graduate and faculty members will focus on everything from longer-lasting batteries for hybrid vehicles to powertrain efficiency.

WatCAR is a leader when it comes to automotive-academic collaboration.

GAIA provides new components and systems for green technologies in the auto industry.
